Chinese Coin Bracelet
Adele Kimpell of Bead Dreamers

This project utilizes a simple netting stitch worked in flat circles to create ‘coins.’
The ‘coins’ are linked together during construction of the project. The clasp is a simple peyote toggle. The project requires only needle, thread and beads. This project also makes a wonderful necklace. This project was inspired by a rare, ancient Chinese coin dating back to 300 BC. In ancient China, money was shaped like a knife and the end of the knife had a hole to hang on the bench or table. Over time, the knife part disappeared
and only the "handle" or the coin remained. The coin's shape is symbolic. The round outside represents heaven (the universe) and the center hole represents China (Earth). In China, the symbol for ‘country’ is surrounded by a square, which is probably why the round coin with a round hole was short-lived and is so rare - yet examples of it live on today. Complement your rare beauty with this bracelet and/or necklace symbolizing the universe and the earth.

Students please bring a Scissors and a personal task lamp if desired.

All skill levels are welcome.

Creative Wire Work
with Wisconsin artist Sandi Obertin

You will learn some basic WIRE WRAPPING TECHNIQUES and some WIRE BENDING TECHNIQUES that will add decorative interest, elegance and functionality to your jewelry projects. PLEASE SEE Sandi's representative samples.
Wire wrapping techniques are especially useful for linking beads together in a creative fashion when making bracelets and necklaces and for creating unique bales for pendant pieces or accents for earrings.
This class is technique driven. You will have the opportunity to learn several different techniques and experience hands-on how to accomplish them. NOTE: We will not be creating a finished multi-link necklace or bracelet during this class. Most pieces will be "pendant ready" and can be strung on a cord and worn home, if desired or you can choose to later incorporate your individual focal pieces in one of your special projects.

Each student may choose six of Sandi's handmade focal beads to work with. Students may choose bead colors and sizes that they will enjoy working with. (Students may bring some of their favorite focal beads to class to work on, if desired. If you created beads in our Polymer Clay Art Beads class earlier in the day, you may incorporate some of those beads in this class, if you like.) A variety of small accent beads and a variety of wire will be provided. Students may take their extra supplies home with them if they do not finish all six focal pieces during the class.

Creative wire work allows individuals to create one-of-a-kind designs without making an expensive investment in equipment. Jewelry pliers and wire cutters are basically the only equipment that is really necessary.

Students please bring a round nose pair of jewelers pliers and/or a pair of chain nose pliers and a wire cutter. (If you have additional types of jewelers pliers, please bring them along also.)

We will have some inexpensive jewelers pliers for sale if you don't have them. We will also have some of Sandi's additional one-of-a-kind handmade focal beads available for purchase.
